Daily Letter from Glenn

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22)

Today:

April 1, 2010

Dear Friends:

The basis of modern law is rooted in our Old Testaments.  Any one doubting this need only look at today’s passage from Exodus 21.  I was amazed as I studied this yet once again at the similarity in language to our modern edicts.

The temperatures reached nearly 80* yesterday, and are supposed to be even higher today.  We are really enjoying this warm weather.  We are forgetting the winter that hopefully is past.

I am having trouble with my laptop, getting it to connect with my web-server.  When we go to Lexington in a couple of weeks to the BFM Conference, I may not be able to communicate in the usual manner.  Dave is working on this for me.

Have a good day,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

When I awoke this morning, the thermometer was sitting on 60*.  This is unheard of in northern Missouri this time of year.  That 60 should be the high is easy to grasp, but that it is the low is unimaginable.  We are going to enjoy it while it lasts.  Often, when we were in Kentucky, our Azaleas were frozen back the first week of April.  There is no frost in the forecast this year.

Harold sits in the hall at the Twin Pines Nursing Home.  He loves for me to visit with him.  I hardly know how to conduct the visit with other of the residents and the nurses passing by.  After a few remarks about the weather and about how he was feeling, I started to leave.  He said to me, “Could we have prayer?”  I then read with him from John’s gospel chapter ten and had prayer with the old gentleman.  This was a rather public reading and prayer.  May the Lord be praised.

Judy and I walked in the neighborhood this morning.  The wind is rather brisk, but the temperature is fine.  In fact I was a bit warm before the walk was finished.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

The daffodils in our neighbor’s yard here next to the church building are blooming.  Our daffodils at home have yet to bloom.  These in Mr. Carter’s yard are the first blossoms I have seen so far this spring.  Warm weather is predicted for this week. Soon spring will be bursting out all over.  It is a welcome sight.

We are looking forward to the Spring Conference in the interest of Baptist Faith Missions at the Thompson Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky.  The Conference begins April 12 with supper on Monday evening.  Come along with us.  Your heart will be warmed; your mind refreshed.

I got my lawnmower serviced and ready to go yesterday.  I still don’t have any grass to mow, but I guess it is better know how to ride horse and not have one, than to have a horse you don’t know how to ride.  When the grass gets up, Judy will be ready.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

All went well at worship yesterday.  We had nineteen visitors show up at the 11:00 o’clock hour.  We never know who is going to come to worship.  In a year’s time we have many visitors.  If they should all come the same Sunday, we would have trouble seating them.

The sun is shining beautifully this morning.  There remains a chill in the air.  It was but 31* as we went to walk this morning.  Consequently we walked again at Wal-Mart.  We are looking forward to the air warming sufficiently to walk out of doors every morning.

We are undergoing a big change in our garbage collection in Kirksville.  They have given us trash bins on wheels.  They have raised our garbage bills significantly.  These bins can be picked up by the driver of the truck without his having to get out of his seat.  I would have thought the savings in labor costs would have created sufficient excess to have covered the costs of the bins.  We have a second bin for recycling.  They have discontinued the yard and leaf collections.  We had a nearly perfect system until these changes were made.  I guess we’ll get used to the new system in time.

Have a good day,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

WVU beat an awfully good basket team last evening.  I felt sorry for the Kentucky players after the game.  I always feel sorry for the losing team.  They work so hard for victory, only to end their season in defeat.  We are happy for the Mountaineers and the good people of West Virginia.  We are sorry for the rabid Marshall fans.  I wish they could learn to rejoice in WVU victories the way we do in theirs.  They would be happy more often.

I have enjoyed the study concerning the Sabbath this morning.  I am confident a Sabbath keeping is important to the people of God, even at this late stage in the development of God’s Kingdom.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

There is going to be war at the Archer house Saturday.  Kentucky must play West Virginia.  Judy has already written on my bracket sheet, “Go Big Blue.”  I think she thinks they will be black and blue when the game is over.

It is bright and sunny here in the Heartland this morning.  It was down to 28* however, and we walked at the Wal-Mart.  We are looking forward to some 70* days according to the weather prophets.

I am reading through the Gospel of John with the nursing home residents.  Many of them seem to really look forward to this reading and the explanation given to the passage.  It has been almost a year since I began doing this, and we are beginning to read in the tenth chapter seeing that our Lord Jesus is the Good Shepherd of the Sheep.

I am yours in Him,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

Greetings in the Name of our dear Savior.  How precious is His Name to those who know the joyful sound.  So many live and die without the joy of sins forgiven.  Most live in a life of denial.  Others live under a load of guilt and shame.  The believer in Jesus Christ has confronted his sins.  He has owned his sins, his responsibility for them, and he has accepted the gracious invitation of offing this burden at the foot of His cross.  This is indeed the joyful sound.  (see Psalm 89:15)

Allen and I got the water heater into operation yesterday.  All is well with it.  The pressure regulator on our hot water heating system has now sprung a leak.  Last evening we had visitor at prayer meeting that is working on the heating system at Truman State University.  He heard us talking and praying about this new problem and he asked to see our boiler.  He has experience in this field, and has taken down the part number we need and has promised to fix it for us.  We had never seen this good brother before in our lives.  The Lord is good, especially to those who love and fear Him.

Plan to attend the Baptist Faith Missions Conference at the Thompson Road Baptist Church in Lexington, Kentucky.  The Conference is April 12-14.  It begins with Supper at 5:00 P. M. on Monday evening.  Come thou with us, and we will (by the grace of God) do the good.

I am yours in Christ, Glenn

March 24, 2010

Dear Friends:

The new water tank is installed.  We have the stack to connect yet, the tank to light, and leaks to check for.  We should be done with it all in less than an hour.  We do have to cart off the old tank, however.  The installation went well.  Allen is a good boss.  He is easy to work with.  I think Jim is coming today with his truck and dolly to help us get the old tank out of the basement.

The nursing home visits went well.  The old folks are expecting me any more.  I was afraid we wouldn’t get done with the water tank in time for the nursing home visits, but as the Lord would have it, Allen had an afternoon appointment, which freed me up to go about my usual business.

I was pretty tuckered last evening.  Didn’t get much done after supper.

Have a good day! Glenn.

March 22, 2010

Dear Friends:

As I write, I am on the phone with a hot water tank dealer waiting for prices for a hot water tank here at the church.  The galvanized line in the top of our old tank has deteriorated requiring us to purchase a new tank.  Just now got back from purchasing a new 40 gallon tank.  This letter has been sitting here waiting on me.  Did get to pass out a tract or two while making the purchase.  Allen is working with me.  We have the old tank disconnected and will begin installation of the new one in the morning.  Allen is busy today and is not able to help with the work.  He’ll be helping in the morning.

The weather is beautiful there today.  The sun always shines a little brighter after the Mountaineers win.  Too bad Missouri had to get beaten.  Someone had to lose.

Have a good day.

Glenn

March 21, 2010

Dear Friends:

Yesterday we got a spring snow, two or three inches of the stuff.  It is 32* this morning.  The snow did not stick to the roadways or sidewalks.  Our porches were covered with more snow than on the grass.

We are looking forward to good day in the Lord here at Faith Baptist Church today.  Let us pray for one another as we seek to do His will.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn
