Daily Letter from Glenn

“While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.” (Genesis 8:22)

Today:

February 8, 2010

Dear Friends:

The Lord gave us a good day in his service.  Sam taught the during the Sunday School hour.  We had children for that Judy and Janet taught during this time.  I preached yesterday morning from text, “Little children, keep your-selves from idols.”  (1 John 5:21)  I thought this was a good text for Super Bowl Sunday.  Sam preached at the nursing home yesterday afternoon.  The rest of us went along to help with the singing.  The old folks enjoyed our coming.  Sam preached again last night concerning the miracle of the loaves and fishes.  He preaches each first Sunday night of the month.

After church Judy and I went to McDonald for a hamburger and a hot fudge sundae.  While we were in there our car got covered in snow.  We have two additional inches of snow this morning, with more on the way.

Tom’s grandmother remains in critical condition.  Keep her in your prayers.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

Today is my mother’s 104th birthday.  She was born in 1906 and went on to glory in August of 1984 when she was but 78 years of age.  My mother was godly woman who taught us the fear of the Lord and respect for His Word.

Yesterday I met with Jack and a science teacher from Truman State and Jack’s father.  We discussed how we might be able to influence the educators of Adair County to include the idea of creation in the science curriculum.  Pray for Jack, a tenth grade student, who is bringing thought to bear upon this subject in our county.

I receive a call a bit later from the local hospital.  A young man had O. D., and I was called upon to speak to his family.  It is touch and go with this young fellow.  Keep him in your prayers.

Later in the afternoon Judy and I drove to Memphis to speak with Tom’s grandmother.  She is ready to go on to meet her Savior.  We drew much comfort from her readiness to meet the Lord.

Last evening we spent a comfortable time before the fire.  Snow has come and gone in the Heartland.  It piled up five or six inches, but Missouri does a good job of clearing the roads and streets.  Judy and I cleared our driveway.  She insisted on helping.  At any rate we are not much inconvenienced by the snow, and the fire sure felt good.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

The nursing home ministry is more than one person can do.  These dear old people love for someone to come by and spend a few minutes of precious time with them.  In the time allotted, I cannot see all the ones that need visits.  The nursing homes do a better job of keeping the old folks occupied than they used too.  They do not let them just lie in their beds and wither and die.  They keep them active doing many things.  We are thankful for the improved care our old folks are receiving.

The snow has returned to the Heartland.  We have, now, only a little more than an inch.  It is still snowing.  The temperatures are in the low thirties.   I think our snow is miniscule compared to what is falling in the East.

Allen and I are going to replace some receptacles that have been heating up a bit.  We think the quality and the age of the receptacles are the problems.  We shall see.  Also the door to our auditorium is creaking terrible, so much so as to be an embarrassment to visitors that come a little late.  We are going to take that down to see if we can lubricate it in some way.  We have tried everything imaginable to stop its groaning while it is in the standing position.  Allen is a good deacon.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends

It is cold, but not quite so cold, 28*.  We are expecting anywhere from 3 to 6 inches of snow before tomorrow evening.  The weather service usually misses its predictions of snow totals.  I wonder about a people who can predict the climate for decades ahead, but cannot predict the weather for the next twenty-four hours.  It seems to me there is screw loose in this formula somewhere.

Tom’s grandmother, Mary, continues to need our prayers.  Bro. Louie Carver is home from the hospital.  He still has a ways to go.

We had five visitors in last evening’s prayer service.  A young man in the Adair County School system is preparing a paper and collecting signatures on a petition challenging the teaching of an atheistic explanation of human existence, especially since it is being presented as the only possible means by which human existence can be explained.  When I received his request for us to sign his petition, I called him and asked him to come over and present it to our church.  This he did last night.  All of our people will sign it, and I hope other pastors will join in encouraging their people to do so.  Jack brought his father and mother and his two grandmothers with him.  Isn’t it grand to find young people who are willing to take a stand?

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

We have another cold morning in the Heartland.  The temperature bottomed out at 11*.  The sun is shining brightly.  We did not get the snow that others enjoyed over the weekend.

It was good to see the people at the Twin Pines Nursing Home again yesterday.  I had not seen them since the fifth of January.  Many had missed the Bible Readings and Prayers.  I am thankful for the good care all three of our nursing homes in the city give to our people.  I am only able to visit two on a regular basis, but even in the third one which Bro. Sam preaches in on occasion, it is clear that the people are receiving good care.  Nursing Home care has improved over the years.  We thank God for this.

We are still walking at Wal-Mart five mornings a week.  We try to get in and out before seven o’clock.  That way, we don’t feel as if we are in the way of their business.  Few people frequent the store before seven.  There are always some customers up and about by then.  The workers are going and coming at both the six and seven o’clock hours.

The Lord Bless and Keep You,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

Yesterday was a busy day.  Always on Monday we do our banking business.  We are always thankful when we can pay all our bills.  We have enjoyed nearly 46 years of married life, sitting down on Monday morning and of having been blessed with being able to pay our bills.  God is so good to us; we are not as thankful as we should be.  The first check we write every Monday morning is our tithe and offering to the church of which we are a member.  We have sought to “seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness” and He has been faithful, “to add all these things unto us.”  You can never go wrong in putting God first in your life.

Tom’s grandmother is critically ill in a Memphis, MO hospital.  She is 89 years old.  Keep Mary in your prayers.  We went there to visit with her near the noon hour.  Tom treated us to dinner at the Memphis Café.

Our friend, Bob, has passed away as a result of a brain tumor.  We stopped by the funeral home after our visit with Mary.  His funeral is today at one o’clock.

Coming home around three, Judy got busy doing this and that.  I chopped kindling enough for the next week or so.  Mrs. Moots is bringing another load of firewood today.  I will have to be home by 11:00 o’clock to help unload and stack it.

We enjoy our life in Missouri,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

We had a good day at church yesterday.  A good number of visitors attended with us.  The Chrisman’s and the Foxes’ came in the morning.  The Rogers’ and the Foxes’ came in the evening.  The Lord gave liberty in the preaching and teaching of His Word.  Judy and I are glad to be home.

We walked almost a mile and a half at Wal-Mart this morning.  According to the pedometer given us by Jonathan and Lisa, we burned 160 calories in more than 3000 steps.  I came home and drank a half cup of buttermilk to get my vitamins down.  I read the label on the buttermilk carton and discovered that I had restored 60 of the calories I had burned.  I know that walking makes a person fat.  The reason I know this is that only fat people walk.  It the same with eating cottage cheese.

In remembering to pick up our pedometer, I forgot to pick up my tracts.  I can only think of one thing at a time.

Have a good day,

Glenn

January 31, 2010

Dear Friends:

January has come and gone.  It has been a cold one in the Heartland.  We have not received as much snow as have some of both our southern and northern neighbors, but it has been cold.  This morning is rather mild with an eighteen degree reading on the thermometer.  We are hoping for a good turnout for church today.

Judy and I watched West Virginia beat Louisville in basketball yesterday.  We then watched Kentucky beat Vanderbilt.  We enjoy relaxing on Saturdays.  We also changed our living room around some yesterday.  After a while, a room needs a revamping just for the sake of variety.  Judy has been saying this for a year now.  I finally got around to helping her do it.  It is a wonder that she didn’t jump in and do it a while ago.  I will never understand how a little woman can move heavy furniture all by herself, but if you wait long enough, they find a way to do.  I didn’t wait long enough this time.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn

Dear Friends:

It is cold and cloudy in Kirksville this morning.  So far we have escaped the snow that is blanketing the land to the south of us.  It looks as if we are home free in this storm.  Hope you Southerners don’t suffer too much in the cold, ice, and snow.  We are amazed at the care God took of us on our journey south.  The region had been hit by snow and cold a week before we went.  It is now being buffeted again.  We never had a slippery road even once.  On the final day of our trip home, just to the north of where we were traveling, black ice covered the roadways.  The roads across Tennessee, Kentucky, Illinois, and Missouri upon which we were driving were perfectly dry.  We are thankful.

Yesterday we were back to our walking at Wal-Mart, time spent in the study of God’s Word, visiting the nursing home, and an evening spent at home with Judy.  It is good to be alive.  We thank God for His mercy.  Today we give away food at the Christina Food Pantry.

I am yours in Christ,

Glenn
